Traveling to Japan? Here are 8 things you need to know!

Here are some ideas to get you ready and some advice on what to think about before traveling to Japan if you’re planning a trip there for the first time.

It’s hard to find trash cans

You should bring a plastic bag with you just in case, as there aren’t many public trash cans in Japan. This is especially beneficial if you want to eat some street food! Before you can dispose of your trash, you might have to carry it for a while.

Rent a mobile hotspot for Wi-Fi

You’ll need all the navigational assistance you can get if you’re traveling to Tokyo! You can always use Google Maps to plan our subway/train routes both within the city and between cities, as well as for walking directions. A mobile hotspot being accessible at all times was very helpful.

The JR Pass might not be worthwhile for you

Everyone advises you to purchase a JR Pass prior to traveling. Unless you have a week-long itinerary that includes several different cities, you won’t get your money’s worth. For Tokyo and Kyoto, a Suica or Pasmo card was sufficient.

There are more places that accept credit cards than expected

Another common misconception about Japan is that few establishments accept credit cards. Although there were a few tiny shops and street vendors who only accept cash, it was no different from a trip anywhere else in the world. Though many restaurants and stores still accept credit cards, bring cash nonetheless.

Avoid attempting to tip

Gratuities are not expected from waitstaff, bartenders, or taxi drivers. In Japan, tipping is not customary. In fact, they might take offense if you try to leave more money. Pay the price as it is to prevent any misunderstandings.

Some restaurants might ask you to remove your shoes

Some restaurants require patrons to remove their shoes at the door and place them in a cubby behind the hostess station. In another restaurant, you can also remove your shoes at the table and tuck them next to our booth. Just a friendly reminder, always wear socks!

Observe the regulations when using the subway

Most people take following the rules very seriously, and you should too! Take public transportation, but do so quietly and with consideration. That means no using a phone while eating or drinking anything. Be careful not to take a seat in a pregnant woman’s, an elderly person’s, or a person with a disability’s priority seat. Line up on the left side of the entrance on the subway platform and wait for passengers to get off the train before boarding.

Foodies’ fantasies come true at department stores

Visit the basement level of Japanese department stores for a foodie’s paradise. Think of the jewelry counter at your neighborhood department store as being stocked with delicious foods instead of jewelry.
